Welcome to Hazel’s Kitchen

A New Space for Inclusive Cookery at Chailey Heritage Foundation

We’ve officially opened Hazel’s Kitchen, a brand-new, purpose-built cookery space designed to offer inclusive and accessible cooking experiences for young adults living with disabilities in our local community.

Until now, our cookery sessions were held in a shared kitchen space alongside our GK’S café team. While it served us well, we knew we could do better — especially for those who needed a quieter, more tailored environment to enjoy the full experience of cooking.

That’s why we’ve transformed a previously underused area in our activity centre into Hazel’s Kitchen, named in loving memory of Hazel Usher, a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. Thanks to the generosity of the Hazel Usher Fund Committee, we were able to completely repurpose the space: removing old equipment, adapting utilities, and installing a fully accessible kitchen designed specifically for wheelchair users.

As Will Folkes, Director of Specialist Services and Income, puts it:

We are incredibly excited to have launched Hazel's Kitchen. One of our primary ambitions at the charity is to provide more opportunities for young adults living in the community to access a range of accessible and meaningful activities — cooking is definitely one of the most popular.

This amazing transformation has only been made possible thanks to the generosity of the Hazel Usher Fund Committee, who awarded a donation in memory of Hazel Usher. We are delighted that her legacy continues through this amazing project

Hazel’s Kitchen is already proving to be a hit. It’s a vibrant, welcoming space where our customers can explore flavours and techniques from around the world — Polish and Cajun recipes are currently favourites!

The committee is delighted to be able to support Chailey Heritage Foundation in its project to transform an unused space into a purpose-designed kitchen for the young people, to be known as Hazel’s Kitchen.

We’re looking forward to welcoming even more people into Hazel’s Kitchen in the months and years ahead.
