At just 15 years old, Charlotte is a shining example of resilience, determination, and the power of personalised support. Diagnosed with Glutaric Aciduria Type 1 at seven months old, Charlotte lost almost all physical ability, retaining only the ability to move her eyes. Yet, through the specialist care and inclusive environment at Chailey Heritage Foundation, she is not only thriving, but also redefining what’s possible. Charlotte’s journey at Chailey has been one of transformation. With the support of a dedicated multidisciplinary team, she has embraced a life full of activity and autonomy. She swims regularly, uses her trike, walker, and standing frame, and is working towards standing independently - a milestone that many with complex disabilities may never reach. Her efforts to stand are nothing short of extraordinary. With intense focus, she pushes up with her hands while keeping her feet grounded, coordinating her entire body to maintain balance. Each session sees her standing for longer, a testament to her strength and perseverance. Charlotte is a tech-savvy communicator. Using her VOCA (Voice Output Communication Aid), she independently orders lunch, writes creative stories, and chats with friends and family — even sending WhatsApp messages to her mum. This ability to express herself has been life-changing. “If I get a WhatsApp from Charlotte, I’ll show it to everyone around me because I’m so excited!” Charlotte’s Mum Her VOCA has become a bridge to the world, enabling her to explore language, build relationships, and share her vibrant personality.
