There was a Breakfast Event for Parents at Chailey Heritage Foundation this month, on the theme of RSE (Relationship and Sex Education). It certainly brightened up a wet grey Tuesday morning in mid-October!RSE for Young People with Profound and Complex Learning Disabilities is one of the subjects in which Chailey Heritage Foundation has taken the lead for many years. The Breakfast Event was intended for parents who’d like to find out more about how we support Young People as they learn about relationships, sex and the wider world. Specialist Teacher Helen Dunman led the event with her usual ‘no-nonsense’ approach. Helen does not shy away from using the correct terminology to describe body parts and care procedures, and she demonstrates best practice with clarity and detail (and a little bit of humour, where appropriate!) Parents took the opportunity to ask tough questions about issues they meet at home, relating to their son or daughter’s sexual development and intimate care, amongst other things. No subject was off limits, and this is exactly the kind of honest, informative discussion that helps to build confidence in parents and practitioners, leaving them better equipped to support Young People in this super- sensitive subject.
