Climbing Everest, One Workout at a Time

Gym members have been pushing their limits since September as part of an exciting Everest Challenge that brings everyone together with one shared goal.

For the first time, the challenge includes every gym user and every piece of equipment. No matter how people choose to train, their efforts count. From boxing sessions to cardio and strength work, every movement contributes to the total distance climbed. Even punches are logged, with one punch counting as one metre. To reflect the climb’s difficulty, a percentage of each distance is converted into elevation, making the challenge even tougher.

Now six months into the challenge, progress has been impressive. Most participants have passed the halfway point, with some clear leaders racing ahead. It’s been great fun to watch determination grow across the gym.

The challenge is split into two routes to suit different abilities and gym access. The advanced route covers 80km, while the beginner route sets a target of 40km. For those wanting the ultimate test, some participants have chosen to go up and down the mountain, doubling their distance.

As the gym’s first challenge on this scale, it has been hugely enjoyed. Detailed data is recorded throughout, allowing participants to see which equipment they used and how far they travelled on each piece once they reach the summit.
