We celebrated a wonderful achievement as Eva demonstrated just how far her communication skills have developed through her use of a Voice Output Communication Aid (VOCA).VOCA is a specialist communication device that helps children and young people express themselves by selecting words, phrases or symbols, which the device then speaks aloud. VOCAs can support communication in many aspects of daily life, from making choices and joining conversations to sharing opinions and describing feelings. As part of a learning activity, Eva watched a short film featuring a teenage character experiencing a range of emotions. She was then asked to describe how the character was feeling. Using her VOCA, Eva successfully identified and expressed several emotions, including excited, worried, scared, sad and angry. For young people like Eva, using a VOCA can provide greater independence and confidence, enabling them to communicate their thoughts and engage more actively in learning and social interactions. Being able to recognise and communicate emotions is an important skill. It helps children and young people develop their understanding of others, build relationships and engage more confidently with the world around them. While Eva's switch work continues to progress well, it has been especially rewarding to see her growing awareness of other people's feelings and experiences. This development reflects the wider work that takes place across our school, where communication is supported in a variety of ways to help every child and young person express themselves and connect with those around them. Well done, Eva! 💜
