Michelle Maskell is a teacher in the Hanbury department at Chailey Heritage School. She qualified as a Registered Makaton Tutor in July 2019 and regularly leads sessions for staff as part of their professional development.
Makaton is a language programme which uses signs, symbols and speech to support communication. Facial expression, eye contact and body language are important, and signs are used with speech in spoken word order. Here at Chailey Heritage Foundation there are many students that use Makaton, and signs can be chosen to suit individual needs and lifestyles. Makaton is taught through songs, stories, topics and general lessons.
Coming soon on our website you will find plenty of Makaton resources, including many more videos of Michelle. But for now, here's a taster of things to come. In the second video, eagle-eyed viewers will spot Michelle signing as part of her Makaton Tutor Choir!
