Since last September, Reuben has been working towards an ambitious personal goal; walking up and down the stairs with minimal support. Reuben has always enjoyed being physically active, but stairs are really challenging for him. However, Reuben’s determination is infectious and the team of experts who support him at school devised a special training and physiotherapy programme for him so he could achieve his goal before Christmas!
His training involved a lot of physical activity, which he really enjoys; from using his walker, trike, and stander, to additional sessions on the Innowalk at his request! These sessions enabled Reuben to increase his muscle strength. Furthermore, his hydrotherapy and hippotherapy programmes were adapted to make sure he was developing his core strength and balance even further so he could hold himself up while climbing up and down stairs.
After months of training the big day finally arrived. One major motivator for Reuben was that if he made it to Headteacher Richard’s office on the first floor, he would be able to message his parents to share his achievement.
With the help of his physiotherapists, Reuben was able to stand up from his chair and hold on to the handrail and started climbing one step at a time while everyone else present held their breath! It was a magical and emotional moment when he reached the top, and he took a further few steps to finally make it to Richard’s office.
The first thing Reuben wanted to do was share his success with his parents. Using his VOCA (Voice Output Communication Aid), and sign language, Reuben communicated his message to his Dad and he then called his Mum on the phone. His parents were extremely proud of what he had accomplished and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room!
Before returning to class, Reuben sat with Richard to read his favourite books, giving him a chance to rest ahead of his big climb down the stairs.
Reuben knew the descent would be his biggest challenge. Carefully, he held onto the rail and, with sheer determination, got to the bottom of the stairs and walked to his wheelchair. As he sat down, there was an eruption of applause from everyone who witnessed his incredible achievement.
With determination, patience and support, Reuben reached his goal before Christmas!!
Congratulations, Reuben. You are a superstar! ⭐️
