Chailey Heritage Foundation was represented at Parliament on 24th January 2023, at a Round Table Review for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Cerebral Palsy held in Portcullis House, Westminster.
The APPG is chaired by Mary Foy, MP, and Paul Maynard, MP. In attendance were Amanda Richardson MBE, Founder and Chief Executive of Action Cerebral Palsy, and Trudi Beswick, Chief Executive of Caudwell Children along with leading experts in the field and people with lived experience of CP; Paula Marten (Assistant Headteacher) attended for Chailey Heritage.
APPG’s are informal groups of members of both Houses with a common interest in particular issues. Chailey Heritage School has contributed to the work of the group during the past two years, presenting at meetings and with a written submission to the report “Growing Up: the transition from childhood to adulthood.”*
Following the publication of this report in October 2022, the group has called for an Access to Education, Employment and Training Opportunities Bill to be brought forward in the next King’s Speech. The themes for discussion at the Review on the 24th were social participation for children with CP, overcoming physical barriers in transport and recreational activities, and how initial teacher training should be developed to include awareness and understanding of this, and other, conditions.
As a special school for children and young people with complex neurodisabilities including Cerebral Palsy, it is really encouraging that Chailey Heritage is at the centre of the thinking around these issues. The impact of this will be proved if and when discussion leads to policy and practice changes, within all education, as a result.
