There’s only a week to go until our biggest fundraising event of the year; the Focus 10K. Over 350 runners will be gearing up to take on either a 10K, 5K or kids Mini Mile at the stunning Sutton Hall Estate on Sunday 14th May.
One of those runners is Kathryn. Kathryn has been using the Leisure and Skills Centre (LSC) gym for seven years and has been training hard over the last few months to walk the 10K race.
Kathryn said: "This will be the fourth time that I will be taking part in the Focus 10K. I have to walk around the course as my movement is limited but I feel so supported by everyone taking part. Yes, I feel sore at the end of it but I am training very hard in the gym at Chailey Heritage Foundation’s LSC.”
When she was just 12, Kathryn suffered a malignant brain tumour which resulted in mobility problems, particularly down the right hand side of her body. However, this doesn’t stop Kathryn from achieving her goals and she’s determined to finish the race like she did last year.
"I come to Chailey’s LSC three times a week to use the gym, and it makes such a difference to me. I use the bike which helps my lower body and I enjoy squats, lunges, shoulder presses, and using the treadmill and cross trainer."
The LSC staff have been helping Kathryn to improve her strength and balance.
Kathryn said: "I love the atmosphere here and the staff are excellent, so helpful. They help me to set goals and they push me so I achieve more. There's no doubt it has improved my balance. I now have less falls than previously and my overall body strength has improved too. Having better movement means less pain. My energy levels are better than ever and, most importantly, coming to Chailey is very social and great fun."

All proceeds will go to Patchwork Farm, the fantastic on-site therapy farm at Chailey Heritage Foundation, which relies solely on donations.
