Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

09 September 2022

Paying Tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II

The Chailey Heritage Foundation community was deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday evening. We joined the country in mourning, marking her passing on our website, through social media and offered our deepest condolences to the Royal Family.

The passing of Her Majesty marks the end of an era, both political and personal. As a Charity, we have been honoured to be under the Royal Patronage since its creation in 1903.

The Queen Mother, who was Patron of Chailey Heritage School from 1940 until 2002, took a keen interest in Chailey Heritage and visited the Heritage site on several occasions throughout her time as our Patron.  We are very fortunate to have in our treasured archives some wonderful photos taken during one of her Royal visits, in June 1945, when she was accompanied by her two daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. During this visit, Princess Elizabeth was shown the Baby Clinic at Chailey Heritage which, by Royal permission, was named after her - "Princess Elizabeth Clinic for Tiny Babes".

We were once more honoured by a very special visit from HM Queen Elizabeth II at the Chailey Heritage’s display at the South of England Show in Ardingly in the early 1970s, where she met members of staff as well as some of the children who were attending the Chailey Heritage School at that time.

As we commemorate the late Queen and her lifelong service to her country and the Commonwealth, we wanted to share those truly special photos with you.

We are truly grateful for the continued interest and support from the Royal Family and our current Royal Patron HRH The Duchess of Gloucester.

State Funeral - Monday 19th September

Please note that in line with national guidance, the Foundation remains open during this period of National Mourning but, as a mark of respect, most of our services will be closed on the day of the State Funeral, Monday 19th September 2022. These include the School, LSC (Leisure & Skills Centre), the Hub and administrative offices.

We have a duty to continue to provide services for our residents in Futures and the Children’s Home and for the families we support through Pathways, so these services will operate as usual.
